What is green cleaning?

In simplest terms, green cleaning is a methodology for cleaning that has a low impact on the environment and is also non-toxic to your home. Back to top.

How do I know that Little Green Men is Green?

The products we use are natural, and they are either water-based or plant-derived. They are effective cleaners and chemicals, but they are also safe for you, your home, and your watershed. To lessen our impact on the environment, we incorporate a number of strategies. We work our schedule to minimize travel time and therefore limit fuel consumption and emissions. We wash and reuse cloth towels instead of disposable products to limit waste. We also love to recycle. Back to top.

What types of products/chemicals do you use?

The products we use are natural, and they are either water-based or plant-derived. They are effective cleaners and chemicals, but they are also safe for you, your home, and your watershed. Some of the products we use are Bon Ami, Citra-Solv, and Ecover. A complete list of products and links can be found on our "Services" page. Back to top.

Do you bring your own equipment and supplies?

To maintain consistency and quality, we bring and use our own supplies and equipment. Everything from rags, towels, buckets, brushes, chemicals and cleaners, brooms, dustpans, vacuums, and even trash bags. Back to top.

Are you bonded and insured?

We are bonded to cover employee dishonesty, and we also carry complete worker's compensation and liability insurance policies. Back to top.

Who will be cleaning my home?

Our company is small, and most of our clients enjoy being on a first name basis with everyone on our team. Currently, Little Green Men employs 3-4 workers while Jason and Spencer (the co-owners) lead the two crews. While we keep to our eco-friendly ethos, quality is our main concern. We train our staff, we emphasize teamwork, and we do our best to make sure that your home is cleaned thoroughly and consistently by the same group of people every time. Meet the crew!

How do I schedule an appointment?

It's easy! See our "estimates" page for a free quote. We will respond with a price range and availability. If you have a timetable to meet (Are you moving? Is Mom coming to visit?), please let us know. Please note that we are a small but growing business so there may be a waiting list. Back to top.

How do I pay for service? When?

We accept checks or cash. While we prefer to receive payment the day of service, other arrangements can be made. Some of our clients use their banks' online bill-pay system which generates a check which is then sent by mail to us. Back to top.

What do I do if I have to cancel an appointment?

We understand that sometimes things come up. All we ask is that you either call or email us by 9:00 AM the day previous to your appointment to reschedule or cancel. There is a $35 missed appointment fee if you cancel the day of service or for some reason we are unable to clean due to an error on your part (forget to leave key, admission slip, etc.). Please review our Service Agreement page for details. Back to top.

What do I do if I miss a payment?

Accidents happen, and maybe you left this morning without leaving us a check. Don't worry. Just pop it in the mail (here's the address). Otherwise see our "Contact" page and drop us a line to make other arrangements. A late fee of 15% will be added for payments not received within 10 business days of your appointment. Back to top.

How do I get the most out of my cleaning?

Cleaning isn't easy (that's why you've hired us!). Our main concern is access to the areas that need the cleaning. This may mean that you need to tidy up or de-clutter. Clearing away clutter on counter tops and floors so that we can access them easier; putting away dishes and/or food products in the sink or stovetop; putting the toys in the toy box; etc. After you've done a few minutes of prep work, we will be able to dust, vacuum, and mop away the funk!

For the day of your appointment, here's a quick checklist (some items may not apply):

  • Leave a key (or make arrangements)
  • Admission slip available at the front desk
  • Minimize clutter
  • Clear counter tops
  • Make sure the dishes are manageable
  • Leave out the bed sheets and linens
  • Write the check

What is the service area for Little Green Men?

We service all of DC, parts of NOVA (Arlington, Alexandria), and a limited area in Maryland (mainly Takoma Park, Silver Spring, Chevy Chase, Bethesda, and Hyattsville.). If you're unsure if you fall into our service area, please shoot us an email and we'll let you know. Back to top.

Do you do commercial cleanings?

We clean apartment/condo buildings and offices. Email us for details.

At this point, we mostly do residential cleanings but are slowly expanding into commercial. If you have a small office or common areas in your condo/apartment building that needs to be cleaned, give us a call and we'll see what we can work out. Back to top.

Do I need to be home for my cleaning?

It may be a good idea for you to be there on your first cleaning to talk about your priorities and let us into your home. Otherwise, you don't have to be there at all. Coming home to a clean house is easy! Back to top.

Do you need a key to my place?

We prefer to have a key. We have a full schedule and cover a large service area with a very small number of people. This leaves us to face a mire of curveballs and unforeseen circumstances. Having a key lets us have the flexibility we need to come in and clean. That way, you don't have to miss that conference call, arrive late to the meeting, or wait on us at all.

Other arrangements can be made. Many clients leave a lockbox containing a house-key outside their house or building. This grants us access to a key, but you still control when we have it. You might have a concierge or front desk person that can give us access to your apartment. Whatever your situation, an entry/exit system is important for us to be able to get in to clean. That way other clients' appointments aren't affected, and you get to come home to a clean house. Back to top.
